On this last day of school before summer vacation, we're sending a #ThankfulThursday salute to Magen Naret, who bought several items off our Amazon Wishlist for summer camp. The kids are going to have so much fun with the Scientific Explorer Backyard Kit and the Bug Magnifiers!
If you'd like to make sure our Bright Ideas Youth Development summer campers in Safety Harbor and Oldsmar have a fun and educational summer, you can still purchase from the wishlist at a.co/ijdTQPH.
So proud of our own Ms. Jacqueline for being a huge part of the volunteer group restoring this historic cemetery. If you're interested in learning more or helping, the group's next meeting is tomorrow, May 24th, in our Angela DeVito building (1001 Dr. MLK Jr. St. N, the one with the mural), at 6:30 p.m. ... Congratulations to Southern Fresh for winning first place Best Wings for both Judge's Choice and People's Choice at the @2nd annual Bands & Beer on the Bay. Southern Fresh's whole chicken wings are rubbed with a spice blend then cooked over hardwood charcoal.
Placing second in People's choice was foodtruck Dochos Latin Bistro. Their mango habanero wings were the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. In a tie for third place for People's Choice were Grind House Bar & Grill and Abe's Place Tap & Grill. Abe's Place's big, juicy wings are worth the trip over to Missouri Avenue and next time we're at Grind House, we just might forgo the shepherd's pie for wings.
The judges picked food truck Hot Butts BBQ for second place. And Grind House Bar & Grill for third.
Today's the day! Here are some last minute FAQs about the 2nd annual Bands & Beer on the Bay:
Q: Where is the festival? A: Safety Harbor Waterfront Park, 110 Veterans Memorial Lane.
Q: Where should I park? A: The Boy Scouts will be offering parking at 2nd Avenue and Main Street for $5 (that money will be split between the Scouts and our two charities). Other city lots, like the one on 8th Avenue and Main, will be free. Be courteous when parking on downtown side streets: Don't block anyone's driveways or mailboxes and check the signs. Many streets only allow parking on one side.
Q: What tickets will be available at the gate? A: All of them. $5 General admission tickets are nearly unlimited. Wings Throwdown tickets, $5 for 6 wings, will be for sale until the wings are gone (last year they lasted until about 6:30). We're selling just 400 Beer/Wine Passes ($17 for four drinks) - without the pass, alcoholic drinks are $5 each. We'll even have some $60 VIP tickets available at the gate (includes dinner, shaded seating, private bathrooms).
Q: Can I bring my dog? A: Sorry, no. For the safety of the dogs and our guests, please leave them home. Service animals are allowed with proper documentation.
Q: Can I bring chairs and/or blankets? A: Yes. We'll have a dance/standing area roped off in front of the stage open to everyone; we ask that you only set up chairs and blankets behind that area.
Q: Can I bring my kids? A: Yes. While we don't have any specific kids' areas, several of our vendors will have ice cream and kid-friendly food. You'll get wristbands at the gate, so if you want to bring them early, then take them home to a babysitter and return, you are free to come and go.
Q: What if it rains? A: It's Florida - it's sure to pass, come on down! The bands will go on rain or shine. You are welcome to bring small umbrellas, but please don't bring tents.
Q: Do I need cash? Will you take credit cards? A: We will accept cash or credit cards for purchases at the gate. We will have an ATM available.
Q: What are the times? A: Approximate times: 3:30 p.m.: Gates open 4 p.m.: Jeriko Turnpike 4-6: Wings Throwdown 5:30: The Hard Luck Society 7: Four Star Riot 8:30-10: The Black Honkeys 9:45: Alcohol sales end
Q: How much helps the charities? A: The Kiwanis Club of Safety Harbor and the Mattie Williams Neighborhood Family Center will split 100 percent of the profits.
Q: Can I take photos? A: Yes! Join in our fun on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter by tagging your photos #bandsnbeer
